.: Instructions for the operation of the Pan Pillow

As you become more comfortable with using the Pan Pillow, you will understand the full impact of the product. Clearance issues, additional wheel blocking, and all the other time consuming preparation required before transporting problem vehicles are now in the past. Broken struts, ball joints or problems such as getting a jack under damaged or low clearance vehicle are no longer an issue. You will be amazed how such a simple tool will make your job much simpler and safer, along with reducing your hook up and travel time. Now you can transport these problem vehicles with confidence knowing you will not have to worry about oil pan damage. Follow these simple instructions and you will experience the same success the hundreds of operators currently using the Pan Pillow are experiencing. The Pan Pillow has a 100% success rate and assisted in transporting thousands of vehicles without a single oil pan damaged.

 

When using the Pan Pillow DO NOT block up and short shoe any vehicle unless you do not have adequate clearance to insert the Pan Pillow. In rare situations you may have to lower short shoe to get the towed vehicle to sit high enough in the wheel lift. Fully deflated, you only require a few inches space to insert the Pan Pillow.

 

STEP 1: ATTACH THE TOW VEHICLE TO THE WHEEL LIFT.

Once you have locked the L arms in place, raise the wheel straight up approx. 6 inches and tilt upwards. This will keep the boom from impacting the ground when loading the weight onto the tow truck.

Caution: Be careful not to raise the tow vehicle to an excessive height causing the backend of the tow vehicle to contact the ground.

STEP 2: INSERT THE PAN PILLOW.

Fold legs outward, with the valve stems facing towards you. Insert the Pan Pillow between the undercarriage and the centre pivot of the wheel lift. Next fold the legs down around the square tubing on either side of the centre pivot. Attach the SAFETY CABLE UNDER the wheel lift boom to the ring on the leg on the opposite side.

Never use the Pan Pillow without the safety cable attached.

STEP 3: INFLATE THE PAN PILLOW.

Inflate the Pan Pillow to a height of 4-5 inches between wheel lift and the undercarriage of the tow vehicle. This height is required to avoid damaging the Pan Pillow during transport. When inserting the Pan Pillow into a tight cavity, you will have to inflate and raise the tow vehicle undercarriage enough to achieve the 4-5inch barrier. On wheel lift systems without wheel straps, be careful do not over inflate.

Note: The Pan Pillow requires very little air pressure. In most situations you will require no more than 3-5 PSI.  maximum pressure. Pay close attention to vehicles with plastic shrouds covering the undercarriage as damage may occur. When using wheel lift systems that do not require wheel straps, take extreme caution you do not over inflate the Pan Pillow. This may cause the tow vehicle to bounce out of the wheel lift and detach from the tow truck during transport. Never use without safety chains attached.

 

STEP 4: LOADING THE TOW VEHICLE ONTO THE PAN PILLOW.

Once the Pan Pillow has been inflated to the correct pressure, finish hooking up the tow vehicle as you would normally. Now tilt the wheel lift downwards to a level position, setting the correct tow height for transport. You may have to raise the tow vehicle higher using the up-down control to achieve proper height for transport. This is to be determined by the operator. Now set the safety chains to the correct length.

 

IMPORTANT NOTE: It is critical you tilt the wheel lift down to a level position before towing. This will load additional weight of the tow vehicle onto the Pan Pillow, helping lock it in place. Towing with the wheel lift on an angle could cause the Pan Pillow to shift on the wheel lift, as bumps tend to force the Pan Pillow forward. Extended travel on rough terrain may cause the Pan Pillow to detach.

 

NOTE: You are now able to tow many vehicles with the wheel lift much closer to the ground at the tow end, gaining additional clearance in the back end. You may be safe towing on level ground but there is a good possibility you will have to make adjustments to the height of the tow vehicle before entering steep driveways or uneven terrain before proceeding.

 

STEP 5: REMOVING THE PAN PILLOW.

 

Once you have reached your tow destination tilt the wheel lift upward, gaining easy access to the Pan Pillow. Do not raise to a height that may cause the back end of the tow vehicle to impact the ground. Once you have removed the Pan Pillow, lower the wheel lift down to a safe height to back the tow vehicle up keeping in mind large exhausts, ground effects and spoilers when backing up to a concrete stop.

To remove the Pan Pillow, raise and tilt the tow vehicle upward to gain easy access to the Pan Pillow. Detach the safety cable and remove the drain cap.  With one hand on each end of the Pan Pillow, pull downward to help drain out any excess air. Once drained, fold the legs outward and remove. It is important you drain and remove the Pan Pillow at the same time to avoid the possibility of forgetting the Pan Pillow under the tow vehicle after unhooking.

STEP 6: STORAGE OF THE PAN PILLOW.

Once you have removed the Pan Pillow, place it on the wheel lift boom and press out any remaining air.  Replace the drain cap and return the Pan Pillow to the designated storage place on the tow truck.  Always secure the Pan Pillow to the tow truck by means of the safety attachment.  This is the Law.  Unsecured loads could detach from the tow truck while in motion, cuasing damage or personal injury ou would be help responsible for.

Important Note: When replacing the DRAIN CAP be careful not to over tighten. There is a rubber gasket inside the cap that will become crushed if over tightened causing the Pan Pillow to leak. Do not replace lost or damaged caps with a PLASTIC CAP. Replace used caps every 3 months to avoid leakage. Use caution when using the Pan Pillow as a jacking device as damage may occur from excess pressure to spoilers and ground effects. DO NOT OVER INFLATE! MAXIMUM 20 PSI.
